Interview Preparation


Your goal is to get them interested in you. Develop your marketing plan before the interview to articulate what it is you want to reveal about yourself. They always say SELL YOURSELF; so, know exactly what it is that you intend to sell. Create the picture for you first to communicate it to others

Study the Company. Prepare the picture of you. Create the vision of yourself that you want to communicate to others. When you are able to convey what you know about the company vision, products, services, revenues, cycles of growth, news, and contact information (address and phone numbers), you make a statement about you and demonstrate ability to prepare.

Recite your resume. Know it by heart! Nobody knows the story of you better than you. A good exercise is to organize a list of 3 categories:

  • Skills/Assets: identify them
  • Specific Times: correspond these skills and assets with specific examples
  • Show Results: share the net results positively from the examples identified

  • Enter with enthusiasm precisely between 10 to 15 minutes early. Display how you can manage your time, respect the time of others, and complete all paperwork.
  • Remember the Receptionist. Never underestimate reception influence. The interview starts there so begin by being kind and prudent with your words.
  • Be prepared. Bring same version hardcopies of your submitted resume. Offer one to each interviewer and reserve one for yourself to reference and follow along. Preparation is confidence.
  • Posture alert. Interviewers make the most judgments in the first 10 minutes. Make your first moments count: Sit up straight. Smile. Be positive and energetic.
  • Taking Notes? Ask permission first if you intend to take notes.
  • Answer questions with a colorful picture beyond ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers. Market yourself and your attitude with examples and definitive answers. Get to the point.
  • Listen. Let the interviewer(s) drive the interview and paint the picture for you.
  • Ask. If the job you are interviewing for has not been described, ask them to.
  • Never bring up $$$. Do not concern yourself with dollar details initially.
  • Always. Be honest and straight forward. Always answer direct questions.
  • Dress Professional. Business attire is always correct.
  • State your case. Clearly deliver the facts on what you know you can offer.
  • Cover lack of experience with relevance. Explain an empowering time when you overcame the ‘no experience’ scenario. Then, highlight the positive results and details.
  • Pregnant Pause. After each question, pause to think, answer, and pause again when finished.
  • Help! Not all interviewers are experienced. Make a list of important attributes and experiences that you feel must be communicated during the interview.
  • Identify question. Be ready to respond to technical questions with common terms. For behavioral,use specific examples and describe a time when…
  • Your turn. Ask only relevant questions such as “what is the major challenge for the person who does get the job” or “what would drive the success of this role”, etc.?
  • Lastly. Look’em in the eye, leave with a firm hand shake, and express interest.
